Wireless network adapter alternative to built in WiFi?

Hey everyone. I’m working on a new parts list, and I needed WiFi for it to work in my home (Ethernet would require me to route it from my basement, two stories up. Not an option.) what should I look for in a wireless adapter? I don’t need it to be incredibly fast, but my max budget for it is $50 (anything lower is greatly preferred.) any recommendations?

Consider a dedicated AP on the first floor, which will give much better coverage to the entire house. I am actually in the same situation, FIOS gig using their quantum router in the basement, wifi disabled. UAP-AC-LR wired ethernet on the 1st floor toward the center of the house (gives me full 5ghz in my entire townhouse). Both my kids use a generic AC1200 usb adapter w/ 5dbi antenna & a usb 3.0 extension cable w/ weighted base. They both get 400mbps connections with low latency, on-line gaming is no problem.
