Wireless network interference

Hi all,

I moved to a new building some 6 months ago and signed up for an internet contract with one provider. They offer free wifi so I went for it. However the speed of the network was very poor and their helpdesk could not explain why.

Some days ago I realized that in my building there are another 9 or 10 wifi networks, most of them from the same provider and all working on the same 2,5 GHz frequency so basically this might be the reason why the network is so bad. I tried with cable connection and it works great.

What could i do to solve it? is there a way to boost the signal on my rooter? Should i buy some equipment or something to help on this? Using a cable is not an option as i have a distance between the modem and the computer of 15/16 m and i don"t like having that much cable laying around.

Thanks a lot,

Marius

You can (1) use cable, (2) use a 5GHz wireless connection, or (3) run the free wireless anaylzer inSSIDer to determine if any 2.4 GHz wireless channels are free (from the three non-overlapping channels 1, 6, and 11 -- it is better to have several networks on the same channel than on adjacent overlapping channels). With so many networks around you it is unlikely that 2.4GHz will work well, so the first two options will probably give the best results.

inSSIDer is available HERE.
