Wireless not working in ubuntu for dell 1545

i am new to this ubuntu(linux). i installed ubuntu 10.04 on my inspiron1545 and my wireless is not working.I installed the propriety driver and it wrote installed but not in use so i installed my windows driver using ndiswrapper. and loaded it using the command sudo modprobe wl but it is telling me the wireless is disconnected.Please can anybody help me.

ndiswrapper should generally be avoided if there is a driver available. If it said it installed the driver, then go to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers. If the driver is located there, select it, and click Activate.

Not guaranteeing it will work, but it's just something to look into.
