I'm trying to use an old TP-Link router as a switch (not a permanent setup) and both computers have internet but neither can connect to the local network or ping eachother. Do routers not support this functionality, do I need to go pick up a switch?
Not sure what you did wrong. In many routers there is actually a switch chip that runs the lan ports so the traffic does not even pass the router chip.
Make sure you use only the LAN ports not the WAN. Disable the DHCP and set the lan ip to not conflict with your main router

On the TP-Link, you need to switch off firewall, DHCP, UPNP, basically anything that makes it a router and setup a static LAN IP address and connect via normal port.
