Wireless Router parental Controls and ethernet switch.

Greetings,

First time in the forum. I decided to join after many years of using this awesome website. I have searched for an answer to my question on the web but have found no answer.

I am setting up a wired network for my home, I am purchasing ASUS (RT-AC68U) Wireless-AC1900 router and a On-Q 24-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch DA2524. I like the time scheduling feature on the wireless router so i can control my teenagers time restrictions on consoles, phones and pc's.

The question is will this router, connected to the ethernet switch and the switch connected to the devices still be able to use the parental control setting in the router? Or does the switch bypass the time restricted settings in the router?

Please be patient with me, I am new at this. Logically my mind says that I will still be able to use the routers settings.. Any thoughts or advice would be great.

Yes. The switch is transparent to the network.

The switch should be transparent if you properly configure it. If you set it up as a subnet you won't be able to use say, time controls but still will probably able to block sites.

That switch is an unmanaged switch, it is a layer 2 device which is transparent to the network.

Actually, because it is "unmanaged" there is nothing to configure. It just connects devices within a single IP subnet.

The switch will have no effect on the router settings.

Thank you so much. This is my first networking job, I have spent countless weeks and hours researching all that I need to do for a home network. I am certain my teenagers streaming and gaming experiences will be an improvement. One more thing, would you professionals recommend me using a patch panel?

If you have cables coming from many rooms to a single location, a patch panel can improve things by giving you a place to DOCUMENT things. It can also provide flexibility because you can patch from one port to another if needed.

I didn't use a patch panel for my decidedly amateur home network on the advice of a salesman who told me it takes different tool to do the termination. I labeled the cables instead. So either way. But a panel will have a more professional look.

It depends on the patch panel. There are a few that allow you to do an RJ45 on both sides and not have to do a punch down. Punch down type are MUCH more common but there are RJ45 union type panels.
