Wireless Router recommendations

Here's the situation:

Cable comes in to the basement so router is in the basement. Having range problems in areas of my house. The WAP54gx I put in to extend range keeps dropping. Some devices randomly started reporting unable to connect to network (two iPhones) and none of the fixes work. So I need:

Range
Reliability
Decent signal strength through walls.
Doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I think..depending fully only from a router to reach the whole house will not work if you have thick walls.
Instead of looking for better routers, why not try to look for repeaters to extend your WLAN range?

Keep the router, switch off its wifi and purchase a setup of Devolo dLAN 500 AV Wireless-N Homeplug Kits as wireless access points and use you internal electric wires as your network cables.

Walls aren't that thick. I tried a couple of extenders, but they didn't work. Might have been the brand though.

I never had a problem with wireless anywhere in my house until I got the Arris wireless gateway from Comcast. That thing was garbage. I had them put it in bridge mode so I could go back to my old router. Suddenly it has problems, so I turned off the wireless on it and pulled out the WAP. I'm about to turn both back on to see what happens.

Devolo kit is expensive and appears to be UK only since the only sites I find when I search the name are UK
