Hello, I've been having problems with port forwarding i have a router and a modem the router is a netgear wndr4500 and my modem is a ZyXEL Q100 my router has its own gateway and so does the modem i was thinking that because my router has DHCP enabled that it prevents me from portforwarding so i don't know what to do if there is a way to turn it into some sort of a switch that has a wireless signal. Any suggestions and help would be very much appreciated thank you.

Solution
It depends why you have the wndr4500 in the first place. If it is because of wireless coverage issues then you want to run your second router as a AP )ie a wireless switch. It is trivial and a quick search of "how to run my router as a AP" will get you even youtube videos.

If you need some of the other function the router provides your modem/router does not like parental controls or something. Then you have a much trickery thing to attempt. You could put the router/modem into bridge mode which makes it just a modem, you would need to run pppoe on the second router wan port.

You can mostly get rid of the port forwarding issue by using the DMZ option in the modem/router. You would set your second router as the DMZ it in effect...

Still if all you need is better wireless coverage and you are ok with the first router features setting up a AP is the simplest option.

Tha k you for the help I did eventually turn my router to a AP which got it to work, the reason why I have a router is because most of the devices in my house use WiFi and my modem doesn't support that and only had one ethernet plug which the router uses that has 5 other ethernet plugs and the wireless radio but thank you for your time have a good one
