Question Wireless Router with external ssd drive

Many routers have USB ports which allow storage devices to be connected. The performance of routers as storage servers means that the speed of an SSD would be wasted. A spinning disk would be a better value.

It would depend on how much power the hdd requires and how much the router can provide. You'll have to read the specs of both devices. The router may only provide enough power for an ssd.

An external 3.5" HDD will require wall power. Whether connected to a PC or a router.

External SSDs can run from just the 5v on a USB port.

Most Asus routers have USB storage with internet access. I wouldn't put any files that need to be secure though: https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1011275/
