There is a simple answer I presume but I am wondering if there is a simple way to know why I shouldn't use a single cable to connect the power to multiple storage sources. I was putting together my own build and it started smoking (yikes!) . I separated the cables into each storage device and it works fine now. Is there a simple way to tell what instances there are where I can use a single cable for both storage sources? I don't mind using separate cables; I just want to know why it started smoking. Thank you in advance.

First thing that came to mind... Right now I have 6 HDDs hooked up to one lead, there are three SATA ends on the cable from the company, and each one has a splitter on it. No smoke. 2 HDD/ODD/SSD shouldn't be that much of a pull on the PSU that there's gonna be smoke. HDDs are like 5w, ODD 12w, SSD 3w, something like that, I know my numbers are off, but the point is the same. Unless you've got stuff majorly overpulling from your PSU, there shouldn't be smoke. Ever.

@smorizio and jossrik - ok, ty for the response, and yes ..I suppose that there may have been a wiring issue. Using separate cables for the HDD and the SSD did the trick. And I don't want to duplicate the same problem to isolate the problem before it does something worse. I'll jus have to b more careful.
