wmp can play most files but all files lag on vlc. whats wrong with my vlc player?

for some reasons I can play files without lag on windows media player but there is something seriously wrong with my vlc. its consistently lagging on a regular interval.

I had vlc player on this computer before but something appears to be wrong now? a default setting perhaps? I remember having this problem before but cant seem to find the solution this time.

I love vlc wayyy more than wmp obviously so please help me fix this!!

Go to Preferences - Input / Codecs - Access modules - File

change a caching value

You could change the caching value as romanemul stated or you could just try reinstalling vlc and see if that works.
