Woebearer ability timing

My graveyard is empty. I attack with two creatures, Woebearer and XXX.
XXX is blocked, receiving leathal damage, while Woebearer is unblocked
and deals damage to my opponent. Woebearer's triggered ability goes on
the stack. Is this after goes to the graveyard? Thus, may I now
target that card and return it to my hand? I think so, but wanted to
verify...

Thanks,
-Trevor.

Woebearer
{4}{B}
Creature -- Zombie
2/3
Fear
Whenever Woebearer deals combat damage to a player, you may return
target creature card from your graveyard to your hand.

The combat damage is all dealt at once; this triggers Woebearer's ability,
correct. Then we go through the "active player gets priority" ritual: first
check for state-based effects ... oops, this XXX creature dies. Check them
again ... nothing. Now put triggered abilities on the stack: Woebearer's
ability picks a target in this part, and can pick the XXX card that (just
now) is in the graveyard as its target, assuming it's a creature card there.

So yes, that works.

If Woebearer gets Trample, and deals combat damage to opponent at the same
time it gets lethal combat damage from stuff blocking it (say a 4/1 Elvish
Ranger, for example), then its ability can even manage to get _it_ back
from the graveyard...

Huh; so if I'm reading that correctly, Woebearer is one of the few
creatures you may not want to give First Strike to. In such a case, it
would *not* be able to get itself back, because its ability has already
triggered and resolved by the time it gets lethal damage. True?

True. Double strike, however, would be Nifty...
