[WolfSpoor] Question for a.g.ww posters

Hey, everyone.

I'm the webmaster for WolfSpoor which, if you haven't heard of it before
now, is the main place to go online for White Wolf / Sword & Sorcery
news and such. Address in my sig.

I have a question for everyone.

I'm considering adding a function to the website such that all news
posted there would automatically be posted here to the newsgroup as
well, at the same time.

Is there a problem with that? It was suggested to me that people might
interpret that as spamming (you can judge for yourself the frequency of
news items by checking out the dates and times of posts on the site).

Theoretically, I could have a single post every week, with a summary of
all the news items posted. But that'd be more difficult to do. Not
automatic, but manual, and I'd have to remember to do it every week
(i.e. it wouldn't be very reliable). Plus you'd miss out on big news
items until up to a week had passed, by which time you'd probably
already know.

There's also the problem of redundancy... for people who don't often
check WolfSpoor, there's already an RSS feed, and a related Livejournal
feed and daily email with news items.

So my preference would be to send a post automatically every time news
is posted to the site. Would you guys have a problem with that? Is there
an alternative that you'd prefer?

Thanks for your time. 🙂

I don't think we're in danger of flooding the newsgroup with so many
messages that important stuff is pushed off the top. I think
alt.fan.bgcrisis gets more traffic these days than alt.games.whitewolf does.

So I'm all for it. Go ahead with the auto-posting.

How many times a week do you post news to WolfSpoor, on average?

Could you tag the posts, not unlike how you tagged this particular post?
Then if people didn't want to read them, they could killfile this tag.

In the past week, fr'ex, I posted 13 items. So about 2 a day, I guess.
It varies, depending on how much is happening in a given week.

Yeah, they'd all have a [WolfSpoor] tag on them.

Natch.

Two posts a day wouldn't kill anyone. When I read rec.arts.mst3k, they
got at least that many This Day In MSTory auto-posts every day. Makes no
sense, but there you go.

Then I say go for it. At the very least it'd give your site more
exposure.

If they haven't heard of it, is it *really* the main place? :)

It sounds a little spammy. BI would go up pretty directly, because the
posts would be "substantively identical" - each would be "here is the latest
news item at our web site". Very much like the problems we had with job
postings before the recruiters pretty much destroyed all our job newsgroups.

Wearing my net.cop hat... I'd report 'em as spam.

Go ahead and post them. If the posts are tagged like this one, whoever
doesn't like them should filter them out and be done with it. I'd like
to see some more news on here.

Judging by my hits, yes. 😉

Actually, my plan was to show the full text of each news item. So each
post would be largely different. Not just "something new was posted on
WolfSpoor! Check it out!" People wouldn't have to visit the site at all,
since the full news posting would go up here.
A large portion of the news I post ends up here sooner or later anyhow,
as people catch on to whatever I'm writing news about.

> Wearing my net.cop hat... I'd report 'em as spam.
Sorry to hear that. With the [WolfSpoor] tag, they'll be easy enough to
filter out, if that's helpful at all.

It'll be a while before I figure out how to implement this. This thread
was to make sure that people actually wanted it before I went ahead and
started working.

Hey, I'm not anywhere close to being a regular (except 'regular lurker', as
I check agww maybe 5 or 6 times a day), but as far as I'm concerned: post
'em! At the worst, people will ignore the posts, and at the best, they'll
generate response. For extra points, figure out how to post agww-responses
on WolfSpoor 😉

Very polite. You an Old Worlder? 😉

God tells us in the book of Genesis, right after Noah's Flood, to eat
everything under the sun. Those who ignore his instructions are no better
than godless heathens.

I'm not sure that's even possible, but I'll look into it. 😉

Tag 'em like you did here, and it sounds great.

Even if I check you daily, I think it would be a good idea, because it
would generate discussions, I think.

Properly tagged, nobody can complain.
