ViewSonic XG2703-GS is an expensive monitor that I won on a raffle and features NVIDIA G-SYNC technology. Unfortunately I have MSI Radeon R9 390X 8GB Video Card, which is AMD and therefore can't take advantage of the G-sync.

So my question is, should I upgrade to a graphics card that is NVIDIA? I bought the AMD card little more than 2 years ago for $380 so I figure maybe it's time to upgrade.

1440p 165hz monitor

you need an upgrade not only because of th g-sync but also because the 390x is utterly inadequate to run that resolution and refresh rate

you want a gtx 1080 ti for it, make sure the rest of your pc specs can handle it

if not just sell the monitor

I think a 1070Ti or a 1080 would also be a good. They probably won't hit the max refresh rate with maximum details at that resolution, but they'll still run up to a reasonably high refresh and be able to take advantage of the G-Sync. The OP doesn't necessarily need to have a video card that will max out that monitor, just one that can make good use of G-sync and give a reasonable frame rate.

According to the hierarchy chart, the 390X is roughly on par with the GTX 1060. I'd say even a 1070 would be some improvement, but, if it were me, I'd probably go to a non-Ti 1080 if I could find a reasonable deal on one. A 1070Ti would be my fallback if a good deal showed up for that before one for a 1080, as the 1070Ti is more or less an "almost 1080"
