I have a P5LD2-VM mobo and the first time I turned it on, there was an extra brass standoff. I didnt find this out until i powered it up 3 more times. I am still hooking it back up, but I am wondering, could I have damaged it?

BTW, I need brass standoffs under every hole, correct?

only place standoffs in locations that match the holes in the motherboard. if there is a standoff installed on the case where there is no hole in the motherboard, there is a good chance that it grounded itself out. every time i have built a machine, I have always had extras, so no worries there. as for damage, it is possible, but there have been many reports I have seen where someone installed a mobo w/o the stand offs and turned it on, only to not have it work. they then reinstalled it with the stand offs and it worked fine.

First, I almost always have extra standoffs when I build a PC. Seems like the companies pack extras just in case one gets screwed up by the installer.

Second, you don't have to have a standoff under every hole. They are there to prevent short circuits between the motherboard and case, but if one's missing, no big deal The secondary use of standoffs is to provide extra strength to the motherboard when you're pushing in ram sticks, video card, etc. Then the board won't flex too much and break, or flex enough to cause a printed circiut to separate, which would be just as bad.

well, i have taken it out and have 1 for each hole now. I am going to finish tomorrow. From what I have read elsewhere, the standoff thing probably did not hurt it.
