Wondering what anti virus software to use

Hey everyone, so my laptop has some serious malware problems and I need to get rid of them asap. My McAfee trial is almost up, and it didn't really do anything to prevent the malware in the first place (maybe I just wasn't using it right) but I was wondering what to get next. A few people have told me to go with Microsoft security essentials, but that just doesn't seem to be enough (again, I don't know if I'm using it the right way). I've thought about going with bitdefender. What do you use? What would you recommend?

I use avg free and I'm really satisfied with it. Another options are avast or if you want paid versions I would get ESET or Kaspersky
