Question Word doc recovery

I did upgrade my PC. Not sure if that counts. And yes, with a fresh windows install.

Well if you did a fresh Windows setup all the files on that old setup would be gone and have to be restored from backups. Need a bit more details about the situation here. How exactly did you do the Windows setup, did you wipe all the partitions off the disk, just did a random setup clicking next to the prompts? How was the disk setup before with your files, backups, etc...? No way to really know how to get the file back without knowing where it may be.

Basically, before I wiped the drive, I saved a folder to an external hard drive with these word docs, and then i transferred them again to the new build, so i guess it makes sense that it cannot find them anywhere.

Okay: was the "move" drag and drop or command line? Command line meaning did you specifically type "Move"

For example:

https://www.computerhope.com/movehlp.htm

Are you able to connect that external drive to another known working computer?

Make and model external drive? USB connection? Does the drive have its' own power source?

When you plug the external drive into another computer do you hear a sound of any sort? Hopefully Windows acknowledging a successful connection and that the external drive is recognized and has been assigned a drive letter. Do you see the external drive in Disk Management?

Then, as has been suggested, search the external drive for *.doc or *.docx files?

What I am trying to determine is if the move failed in some manner and no files actually got transferred or, hopefully, the files simply ended up somewhere else other than expected.
