It never ceases to amaze me how little effort people are willing to put into
things.
Especially these days with search engines that practically do the work for
them.
First, a quick search on Microsoft's web site for "Word Viewer" takes you
to:
(Note a Google Search would get you to the same place.)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/165908
Which clearly points out the two different versions of Word Viewer..
"Wd97vw32.exe" and "Wdvw9716.exe". It explains them quite clearly, so I
will leave that bit of effort to you.
It then clearly points you to the link to download the 32bit version:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/word2000/viewer/1/win98/en-us/wd97vw32.exe
In case that is too long for you:

Now, once you have that version of the Word Viewer - you are "good to go".
You asked about Star Office.. You ask if there is a version for Windows..
Why not go look for yourself?
http://www.staroffice.com/
Strange how the links seem to be leading and intuitive..
However, I recommend (for the least spending on your part):
http://www.openoffice.org/
Check out their claim:
"OpenOffice.org is a free productivity suite compatible with all major
office suites."
Sounds promising, eh?
Wordview does NOT come with the operating system. You are obviously
mistaking "Word Viewer" with "Wordpad", which, indeed, does come with the
Windows XP Operating System. No you do not have to buy Microsoft Word (or
Microsoft Office Suite) in order to view Microsoft Word files. If the above
options have not made things clear, let me try once more..
You need the 32bit version of the Word Viewer from Microsoft to view
Microsoft Word files - although you will not be able to EDIT them with said
product. You can get it by using the links above.
If you want to edit the file (create your own to distribute) - but do not
want to pay for the product you are attempting to be compatible with - try
the FREE Open Office applications! You can get that from the links given
above as well.
I wish you luck on your future endeavors.
