My current PC has slowed over time as it is coming up on 10 years old, and I finally have the money to replace it. Thing is I also need a laptop for my work emails and excel spreadsheets as well as light gaming while I'm traveling. I see a few options for how to proceed and I wanted to gather some opinions as to what would be the best way to go. My budget for the whole endeavor is around $1500-$2000.

Option 1: Buy a cheap laptop and build a brand new pc for home.

Option 2: Buy a gaming laptop powerful enough to get both jobs done in one package.

Any help is appreciated, obviously there are plenty of build posts but if there's a build or laptop anyone recommends I'd be glad to hear it. Thanks in advance.

I've had a beefy gaming laptop years ago, and I won't be getting another one. They overheat and have terrible battery life.
