**UPDATED POST BASED ON INPUT**
Thank you for the input so far. I have updated the build below based on the input (deleting the original post).
******************************
As the subject indicates, I am planning on building a computer which will be used for Gaming and Video Editing (using Sony Vegas Pro 8). The only thing I intend to use from my current computer are my speakers, assume it's a "fresh start" otherwise. I want to stay under 5K including monitor, but this is not set in stone... I can bend if I must.
MONITOR
LG W2452T-TF Black 24" 2ms(GTG) Widescreen LCD Monitor 400 cd/m2 10000:1 DCR
Should I go bigger/smaller? Any thoughts?
CASE
COOLER MASTER HAF 932 RC-932-KKN1-GP Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case
Thank you to Akebono 98 for the advice. I think I like this case, it seems to be large enough, have large fans, etc.
POWERSUPPLY
SILVERSTONE ZM1200M 1200W ATX 12V 2.3 & EPS 12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Modular Active PFC Power Supply
Thanks to Akebono 98 and kubes for your input. I decided to go with 1200 because I may want to upgrade later (2nd GPU, more Ram, more bigger/stronger/faster harddrives, who knows). I may be overpaying by a bit, but I hear that power supplier degrades a bit over time (10% or so) and if anything I will be adding not subtracting from my power needs in the future.
MOTHERBOARD
ASUS P6T6 WS Revolution LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard
Seems solid... Any thoughts?
CPU A (OVERKILL)
Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 965 Nehalem 3.2GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor
CPU B (MID)
Intel Core i7 940 Nehalem 2.93GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor
CPU C (LIKELY CHOICE)
Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor
Yeah... I can't decide. Thanks to Proximon and kubes) from your input, you are correct and I "know" that... But for some reason I cannot commit to the 920 yet. The 965 really is not worth the incremental price, and I recognize that, but at the same time I feel worried about overclocking (just because I have never done it) and want to have a sweet computer. So I am easing into the idea of an overclocked 920.
CPU FAN
COOLER MASTER V8 RR-UV8-XBU1-GP 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler
To ease my mind about overclocking?
RAM
CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory
Originally I was going to go with 12GB, but I think that is overkill for now and would not be fully utalized (yet) by any programs, I can always upgrade later. Does anyone have a different opinion?
OPERATING SYSTEM
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 - Retail
Since my proposed motherboard can "only" take upto 12GB or RAM, I don't need a higher version of windows (Ultimate 64 supports upto 128GB, but as noted I can't go above 12GB with the MB), so this version, which I think supports upto 16MB(?) should be cool? Thanks kubes!
GRAPHICS CARD
EVGA 017-P3-1293-AR GeForce GTX 295 1792MB 896 (448 x 2)-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
Seems sexy...
BOOT/INSTALL HARD DRIVES, 2 in RAID 0
Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000HLFS 300GB 10000 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM
(Thanks kubes) I considered smaller drives, but this is ~4x the space for ~2x the price. Hard to go with the smaller option. Any other opinions?
MEDIA STORAGE and BACKUP, just 1
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
Should I go with 2 in RAID 1? I have never had a hard drive fail on me... But it would suck and I am sure there are horror stories out there.
DVD BURNER
LG Black 22X (CAV) DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 22X (CAV) DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 22X DVD±R DVD Burner
Seems standard...?
SOUND CARD
HT OMEGA STRIKER 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Card
I don't know much about sound cards. I popably will not utilize it's power out of the gate, but plan to upgrade my speakers in the future.
HEADSET
PLANTRONICS GameCom 367 3.5mm Circumaural Stereo Headset
Seems cool for gaming, especially when I don't want to make too much noise and it has a mike.
SURGE PROTECTION OPTION A
Customer Reviews for MONSTER POWER MP HTS 1000 MKIII 8 Outlets 6125 joules Home Theater PowerCenter HTS 1000 MKIII with Clean Power Stage 2
SURGE PROTECTION OPTION B
powercom SMART KING SMK-2000A 2000VA 1200 Watts max 6 Outlets UPS
(OR SOMETHING LIKE IT??? NEED HELP HERE I THINK)
I am not sure what to do here... I am looking for surge protection, though not too woried about maintaining power in an outage (is this stupid of me?). OPTION A has a $350,000 Connected Equipment Warranty, so that seems sufficient, is it? I know little-to-nothing on this matter. The Power forum on TomsHardware seems to deal mostly with powersupplies and such. Advice is GREATLY apprechiated.
Finally, I would appreciate any thoughts on heat management with the proposed case and parts. If I get 3 (or 4) hard drives, I have a feeling I may generate a bit too much heat? What if I overclock? Is there any way to counter this? Am I being paranoid?
Any advice on virus and spyware protection?
Finally, is there anything I can or should do to save money or get better brands/parts?
Thank you in advance for your continued input. I think I am getting closer to the final build, and the advice is helping greatly.
Lukasz
