World Backup Day is this weekend — here are the best hard drive and SSD deals we can find

another made-up day to promote spending. Never heard of "world back-up day" before.
It started in 2011 and is just intended to promote the necessity of backing up your data, not intended to actually sell anything on this day, much like World Privacy Day isn't intended to sell VPN subscriptions, and it's backed up by the lack of stores having a dedicated sale, as opposed to tech publications putting out affiliate linked articles to generate revenue for themselves.

Though I am very surprised that TH did not mention that Google One has deals on their plans, which includes cloud storage, $2.49/month for 3 months for 2B and $0 a month (otherwise known as free) for 2 months for 2TB with Gemini Advanced. Cloud storage for MOST people is what they need since it applies to their phones and automatically backs things up.

What we really need is a proper inbuilt Windows disk imager since Macrium Reflect discontinued their Free edition. It's all well and good keeping individual files safe, but reinstalling Windows, especially if you have to move OS drives, is the largest pain in the butt in the world.

Not just Macrium, but all the other peer applications.

In reality though, an application that costs $50-$80, will serve for years, and can work as the basic protector of your whole system...not necessarily a bad price.
I bought the paid version of Macrium years ago (v6?), and have not regretted it at all.

How much do people pay for a game that they run through in a few weeks?

Some things are worth paying for.

But it is long since time Microsoft added that functionality to Windows itself, or at least to Microsoft 365. All the things Microsoft adds to Windows nobody asks for, yet full disk imaging is left to third party providers.

Maybe they don't want to end up in court yet again, for building in functionality that wipes out a whole 3rd party industry.

Making it an Office 365 feature would prevent that, and provide a better and cheaper (for them) upsell item than their Microsoft Asure VPN, which is data limited and slow as mud.
Maybe so.

The previous Backup and Restore never really worked well.

There is no real technical reason why MS has not included it in Windows or O365.
But they haven't done it, so.....

Because backup and restore functions aren't as flashy as "AI" or as visible as UI overhauls, it's the same reason temporary code for Format Drive has been around for 30 years.
