Ok i'm in the process of building my second pc i bought ram but had to rma it it was faulty so i decided to take out the old ram from my first build, problem is on my first build i removed one of the ram sticks wrong and i dont know if it was the slot or the ram dimm itself which is faulty so how could i test to see if all the ram is working fine, until i get new ram at least.

edit- keep in mind i'm writing this with it in and it's showing up in task manager so i assume that's a good sign but i don't want it shorting out and breaking my motherboard.

If you can boot into Windows, you can use the built-in Windows Memory Diagnostic tool. Instructions can be found here:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/diagnosing-memory-problems-on-your-computer

If you can't, you can hop on over to one of these sites and download Memtest86 or Memtest86+.

Memtest86:

http://www.memtest86.com/

Memtest86+:

http://www.memtest.org/

Memtest86+ is based on Memtest86 however both have been known to return conflicting results, as has Windows Memory Diagnostic tool, so your mileage may vary. The best recommendation is to use more than one software testing tool for the most accurate results, and to run your tests over as long a period of time as practical, as not all errors show up after a single, or even a couple of test passes.
