I'm coming up on the 2 year mark from my last build. I usually start looking into things around this time to see if it might be worth a new build, or to upgrade existing.

Current system:
  • i9-12900K
  • Asus z690 maximus hero
  • Asus rtx3080ti rog strix oc
  • 2 x 16gb ddr5 corsair dominator platinum 5200
  • Samsung 980 Pro M.2
I do overclock but am not hardcore about it.

My gaming consists of MSFS 2020, P3D, call of duty, red dead, etc. I am NOT a hardcore gamer.... I do more flightsim than anything but do enjoy first person shooter type games etc on occasion.

I just upgraded from a G9 NEO to the G9 OLED.... just for reference.

My last 8 systems or so have been Intel.... they have been rock solid over the years. One of my thoughts as compared to doing a new intel build is to do an AMD build which, from what I gather, would not break the bank. If I were to do intel, it would be 14900K, 4080 super (when it comes out), etc etc.

What are your thoughts and could I get a noticeable difference from a higher end AMD system today?

If you feel you are lacking, you could have options with 13th and 14th gen Intel if your motherboard has BIOS updates for compatibility.
I would have a hard time understanding as reason to swap out the whole heart of this system for small percentage gains in performance.

Intel keeps on doing just refresh since 12xxx, gain would be minimal, can't imagine anything overclocked 12900 couldn't handle,
Considering your monitor better invest in a 4090 for instance.

Nope Wait another year. Not worth going for RTX4000 series up from RTX3000 series. Wait and go for RTX5000 series top end. Possibly RTX5090. You got another year to add to budget slowly. Go for it all in.

And no don't even upgrade the CPU. i9-12900K is perfectly fine.

Just don't spend any money right now. Wait for another year. Add to budget as much as possible and go for absolute top end no compromise build then.

As far as CPUs go, a 12900K is still relevant. There's only minor incremental performance differences between 12th gen Intel and 13th / 14th gen Intel. If you're going to upgrade anything in that rig, I'd look at upgrading the 3080TI, but that entirely depends on what monitor you're going with.
