Is it worth buying the i9 9900k or is there another processor close in performance that costs far less? I will be using the machine for mostly gaming and some light Photoshop and Vegas work. Thanks in advanced for your help.

Worth is something only you can determine.

Now, if you're asking about value, it's pretty poor - it needs a damn good cooler, and that just adds to it's already poor value - you may want to consider a 3700X or 3800X instead.
But it is still the top gaming cpu, no contest.

Thanks buddy, any reason you didn't mention the 3900x?

Yeah.
From your stated purpose of the build, it's way overkill and would be an even worse value than the 9900K.
Most games haven't fully saturated 8 threads, and it's not like the 9900K can't run Photoshop and Vegas well.
Thanks for all your help. To be honest I think I will go with the i9 9900k just to say I have the best haha.

You mention gaming so the i9 is the best outright. But then you mention other applications where Ryzen would clearly be better for not only value but performance in the other apps. I second the 3900x or 3700x for a multitude of reasons (value being one of them and the biggest).

the 3700X and 3800X are most definitely not what I'd call 'laggards', even if not quite equaling the 9700K or 9900K in most games... (There is always the 3900X if one feels better about 12 cores and is determined to spend $500 on a CPU to 'feel better')
