So I was planning on building a new PC for gaming over the next couple months and was wondering if going for current gen cpus/gpus is still a good idea value/performance wise.

So the question is, should I wait to get a new system?

Im planning to build a system with a 6700k and 980ti

Thanks

i5-6600K is still the 'go to' CPU for gaming. The benefits from an i7, as far as gaming is concerned, is very little. If you need i7 hyper threading for other apps that's fine. Prices for Skylake have stabilized for the most part and DDR4 prices have come down so you can build any time. New Pascal GPU's coming very soon so you might want to wait and rethink the 980 ti.

6700K can easily handle any game and CPUs don't tend to come down in price when the new version comes out. No new quad core consumer CPUs coming out until the start of September anyway.

Nvidia Pascal is launching around June, but its possible that the Pascal successor to the GTX 980 will not have noticeably better gaming performance than the 980Ti.

Feel free to buy now if you can afford to buy now and are happy with the performance you will get.

As far as CPU limiting in gaming goes I've never seen anyone CPU limited by an i5 4690 or i5 6600.
I've seen people hit CPU limits with i5 4590 and i5 6500.

Would probably be different for 4K or dual GPU set ups, but at 2560x1440 the i5 4690 and i5 6600 seem to do very well.

Desktop i7 is mainly for professional users, working with large 1080P files and the like. i7 doesn't seem to improve gaming.
