First of all here's my pc and laptop...

My main PC...
Intel i5 2500k (4.4Ghz OC)
COOLER MASTER Seidon 120XL
Asrock z77 Extreme6 mb
MSI GTX 760 4GB (superclocked version)
Sandisk Extreme 240GB SSD
WD Black 2TB x1 hdd
Seagate 2TB x2 hdd
16GB (2X8GB) DDR31600 Crucial Ballistix Sport LG
24x DVDRW
Coolmax 950 PS (CUG-950B)
Antec NineHundred Ultimate Gamer Case LG
27” LCD
W7 Ultimate 64-Bit

My Laptop...
ASUS G75-BBK5 I7 3610QM 2.3Ghz
17.3 LCD
GTX 660M 2GB
SanDisk Extreme SSD 240GB
WD Black 1TB HDD (2.5")
8GB DDR3 (4GB x 2)
W7 Home Premium x64

As stated I have a Sandisk Extreme 240gb ssd in each machine. Here is the link for the drive I have...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820171568

I bought them in the summer of 2012 for $169 each and have been very pleased with the performance in each machine. I also have a third one in my wife's laptop (not listed). Since it has been nearly 3 years I thought about upgrading to a Samsung 850 Pro 512gb ssd for each of my machines. Here's the link...

My question is will there be any real world difference between these drives? Samsung's 4kb random read speed is much better but the 4kb random write and 4kb sequential read / writes are almost identical. Here's the comparison below...

Sandisk Extreme - $169 (in 2012)
Max Sequential Read Up to 550 MB/s
Max Sequential Write Up to 520 MB/s
4KB Random Read Up to 39,000 IOPS
4KB Random Write Up to 83,000 IOPS

Samsung 850 Pro - @ $260-$300 currently
Max Sequential Read Up to 550 MBps
Max Sequential Write Up to 520 MBps
4KB Random Read Up to 100,000 IOPS (+61,000 over Sandisk)
4KB Random Write Up to 90,000 IOPS (+7,000 over Sandisk)

I use my machines heavily for all purposes. The SSDs are for the OS and all installed programs except for large games (Skyrim, CoD, etc...). Also, any video rendering is done mostly to my larger storage drives.

I'm just curious if a $500+ upgrade for 2 Samsung drives will result in any noticeable boost in performance. I like the idea of doubling the space on the OS drive but I still have 30%-50% of my existing drives free. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

there is no value int he upgrades aside from storage. From what I've heard the new 3d memory is not that great as a boot disk, nothing in particular just grumblings on the forum. My understand is that the new Samsung drives are excellent for moving large files but nothing special in comparison for a boot disk.

Grain of salt.

I just upgraded froma SanDisk 120 Extreme to a Samsung evo 250gb - because I was sick of juggling space in the 120gb.

I still have the SanDisk sitting in my PC but aren't using it. When I test them with Samsung's Magician software the SanDisk mostly comes out on top with performance figures. So performance wise , its not really worth it. In my case, space-wise it was.

the samsung has 3d v-nand technology that is going to last longer and be more consistant and efficient i researched this new 3d v-nand tech and it is astonishingly better overall every manufacturer will eventually have to go into this direction sooner or later but just make sure it is the samsung 850 not the 840 since the 840 is a 2d tech compared to the bigger 3d tech which the latter runs faster, stores at near 0 power and runs full bore with barely a hick-up i ordered a 250 gb 850 evo and i can`t wait to get it in my hands.the 850 evo and pro has a 5 year warranty included.here are some stats straight from the 850 pro you are looking at...Features sequential read and write performance up to 550 megabytes per second (MB/s) and 520MB/s respectively, and random read and write input/output operations-per-second (IOPS) up to 100,000 and 90,000 each.
Class-leading performance -- enables you to boot up your computer in as little as 15 seconds
Energy efficient - Features Device Sleep mode for Ultranotebooks and improves battery life by up to 45 minutes vs. standard hard drives
Worry-free data security with AES 256-bit encryption, Microsoft Bitlocker and TCG / Opal 2.0 support
100-percent genuine Samsung components from the #1 memory manufacturer in the world
5th-generation 3-Core Samsung MEX Controller ensures sustained performance under the most punishing conditions
Enhanced endurance and reliability - Backed by an industry-leading 10-year limited warranty and 150TBW rating
Perfect for hardcore gamers, mobile users or content creators (like professional animators, video editors, photographers and game developers) who crave the ultimate in performance and productivity
The World's First Consumer 3D V-NAND SSD
Ultimate Read/Write Performance
Enhanced Endurance and Reliability
Efficient Power Management
Capacity: 512GB
Form Factor: 2.5 inch / 7 mm

i guess the reason this ssd isn`t faster is because of the sata 6 gb form factor it just physically incapable of being faster thats why sata 3 is on its way out the door for the many many times faster m.2 ssd`s and pcie ssds they are figuring if you want to get much faster than 2 gbs a sec you will have to get a motherboard with two cpus to handle the speeds these new m.2 ssds are capable of.you really don`t need raid for m.2 either it is just way too fast by itself.

Thanks everyone for all your answers. I just wanted to update you all on what I've decided...

I was comparing different drives and the Samsung 850 Evo kept standing out as a solid performer. While searching online I ran across this...

http://digitalplusstore.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=68

It is a Samsung 850 Evo 250gb MZ-75E250B for $79.

Since this upgrade is about evaluating speed increases and not needed space I decided to take a chance on it to see if there was any real world difference from my SanDisk Extreme 240gb in my ASUS G75. Plus, I have several older laptops (given to the kids) I can put my old SanDisk drive in. Also, the release dates of the new SSDs seem to be around July which is only a few months away. I may re-evaluate a further upgrade for my main PC then. Perhaps Samsung will have newer faster drives on the market (one can hope).

Thanks also i7baby and tbirdou812 for recommending it! I'll let you all know what the results are once I get the new drive.

Hi, do you have any updates on digitalplusstore.com? I made same purchase, and there is no response after one week.

Zilinying,

I ordered mine on 4/22 just before I posted the related message. I received it on 5/1. No communication other than order updates such as "pending," "processing," "shipped," etc. The drive is sealed in retail packaging and appears new. I have not yet installed it due to a hectic work schedule and immediate needs for my G75 during work. If there is an issue I'll update here.
