Worth selling my 770 2GB for an R9 290?

Hey guys. I'm really considering selling my 2GB 770 and buying a 4GB 770, my Fallout and Skyrim could really use the extra VRAM due to the huge mod load order I got going on for both games, and it'll help me keep the GPU longer, rather than upgrading sooner than later due to lack of VRAM. I had a strong feeling I should've went for the 4GB version initially, but I was told it would be unnecessary and stupidly listened. Buy it right or buy it twice.

I understand I'll lose money by doing this, but I really don't mind for the extra VRAM. If I can get around 2-250 for it, I'd be happy. Is it worth listing it on ebay or is there a better place I can sell it? I don't mind living on the integrated graphics for a while, it just gives me an excuse to replay some old classics I haven't played in a while. Hell, I might even save up a bit more cash for a 6GB 780 rather than a 4GB 770 if I can get at least 200 for it.

Edit: Looking at GPU's, if I can get 200 for my current card, I'll probably just upgrade to an R9 290 4GB rather than getting another 770 at the same price point. I lose physx but the increase in performance will be worth it.

You should see a significant gain. But if you can wait I suggest holding a lil while for nvidia 8 series. The maxwell is supposed to be better enchanced gpu with efficient power consumption. However if the need is extreme get a 290 but I strongly suggest save 4 d 8 series. The 290 or 780 u cant go wrong either

I would be concerned about losing more than just PhysX by going AMD; Adaptive VSync and Nvidia driver support alone would make it hard to switch. But in your case, you would also be missing out on the ability to force HBAO+ Ambient Occlusion on Skyrim. HBAO+ adds more depth to shadows and thus affects the graphics quality throughout the game in nearly every situation. AMD cards are unable to force Ambient Occlusion, let alone advanced HBAO+.

The graphic below details the difference, but its an older graphic and is only showing regular Ambient Occlusion, rather than the recently released HBAO+ (Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion). Skyrim on AMD cards looks like the "AO: Off" screenshot.

So I think Asus really nailed it with their GTX 780 Strix 6GB card, a top pick for your situation. Other than that, a high-end GTX 770 4GB will serve you very well.

This was originally my plan, I thought that since I had a 2GB 770 it gives me a decent excuse to splurge on an 880 when they're released.. any further rumors on a release date? I'd prefer not to wait until next year, as I'm a serious nerd and the lack of VRAM is negatively affecting my Fallout and Skyrim experience. I can live with a release date of Q4 of this year, any later and I'll probably just watch some 290's while saving up some cash. Who knows, maybe I'll get lucky and find a 780 6GB or 290 on sale or maybe even a 290X.

Edit: @ 17seconds - Cool, thanks for that information I was wary of going the AMD route, now I think I'll stick with good ol' Nvidia. I do really enjoy AO. I'm not sure if it's against the rules to ask this, but are there any decent places to sell my 770 besides ebay?

End of the year holiday season for the GTX 880.

October-November release? How very perfect! My birthday is in October, giving me an even better reason to splurge on an 880 as a belated b-day gift to myself.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the information!

Oh man, those are going to be some sweet cards!
