So atm i have a Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070, and an i5 6500, i was thinking of upgrading my CPU to an i7 4790K, would this be worth it? would it cause any problems such as bottle necking? i also will need to upgrade my Motherboard as the one i have now will not be compatible for the CPU but i dont know what Motherboard to get or what one will be the best for price.

If you where to keep your existing motherboard the best CPU that could fit into the socket is the 7700K which is better then the 4790K, however it would be cheaper and just as good to get the 8400 and a B360 motherboard. This way you could still reuse your current RAM as well.

But why the i7 4790k though? I7 6700k will give you a superior performance for a lower price, as you dont have to change ram and motherboard. Besides that, why would you want to go back to an older platform?

The i7 6700k is like £20 more than the i7 4790k?

Your going backwards though and you'd also have to replace your RAM as your current platform uses DDR4 (or DDR3L) and the 4790K uses DDR3. Anyways you could get the 8400/B360 motherboard for probably cheaper then the 4790K alone and the performance gaming wise is nearly identical but at least with the 8400 you will have a better upgrade path.

Wait so if i bought the i7 6700k which is better than the i7 4790k will i not have to replace my RAM as the 6700K supports DDR4? what about the motherboard

That is correct. You wont have to replace the RAM or motherboard. Just drop in the new CPU and your good to go.

Ok nice, i was also now looking that the i7 7700k isnt that much more expensive than the i7 6700k so would it be worth it to just get the 7700k? will that require a new motherboard etc? and will it be suitable with my current 1070 GPU

I would actually recommend i7 7700 instead of 7700k, since you will not be able to overclock on your motherboard anyway. It has very similar performance and is also more energy efficient easier to cool. Besides that it comes packaged with a cooler. Good luck :)

You will need to update your bios with your current CPU before you get the 7700k, but after you do it will work fine. It will also work well with your 1070.
