Worth upgrading for VR?

Hello guys... I am planning to buy a VR and also a 2k 120hz monitor this month.

I only use my pc for gaming and I was thinking...is it necessary to make a upgrade in my pc?

Currently i have a i5 4670k
8gb ram
gtx 970 g1 gaming.

I was planning to buy something like
16gb ram ddr4 2400
1080ti
i5 8600k

What do you guys think? My CPU is enough for gaming in 2k/VR?

Your current CPU is good enough for VR. It's also fine for 2K (I suppose you mean 2560x1440). 120Hz is the more demanding thing, and while it will be good enough in some games, in others you could benefit from the upgrade.

For VR you could even keep the graphics card, the 1080 Ti would just allow you to ramp up the supersampling. The upgrade is necessary for the monitor anyway though.

You could try just upgrading the graphics card and keeping the CPU for now. Then you can see if you run into games that are held back, and upgrade it if necessary.

No need to upgrade yet as NVIDIA Volta gaming series will be out in few months. Go for a decent build with i7-8700K and GTX2080/1180 for around $1250-1500(depending on what components you need, like if you already have good quality PSU and SSD, HDD & Case you can save some money)

is what's in my PC. I am also going to be upgrading very soon. Because of that I have been looking into this for months now. Money is slow to save to I've had plenty of time. Because of that I recommend u upgrade to the 4790K and purchase a 16GB kit of RAM. That along with the 1080 Ti will allow for fluid 2.5SS ultra VR with mirror on. Personally I am only going to upgrade to a 1080. My monitor is only 1080p 60Hz. The 1070 would probably be just fine for me but with the Vive in the mix the 1080 is a better option.

the monitor in question is a 3.440 X 1.440 (alienware AW3418DW)


I already have a good SSD/PSU.

My main problem is the ram, i have 4x2gb, and ram is so expensive today...

16gb (ddr3) would cost me $165.
With $185 i can buy 16gb (ddr4)

that is the reason that I was thinking.. if i need to spend money, its better to already get a new rig and sell my current rig.

I was thinking about waiting for the new GPUs from NVIDIA... But if I buy one now I can sell it later this year and just get a new one right?

If i don't get a 1080ti i will not be able to play any games in this monitor with the high resolution and 120hz.

I can't believe anyone would suggest keeping a 970 for VR.... The 970 has .5GB of gimped ram and Nvidia was sued and lost in a class action lawsuit for this. You should really be looking at a 1070 or better.

It meets the minimum requirements of all major PC VR headsets. It also meets the recommended requirements of the Oculus Rift.

The 3.5GB of VRAM is enough for the vast majority of current VR games.
