Worth upgrading from 6300 to 4460?

I've been running with a fx4100 for about 3 years now. Recently got a 6300 on ebay for $60. I figured I would notice a difference and have that "wow" factor but its not really there. $60 is cheap for the 6300 I know, but even then I'm sort of regreting it.

So now I'm looking into the more expensive Intels that everyone raves about. Seems the 4460 is the best bet for me price/performance wise, but I was wondering if its worth the upgrade. I'd have to get a new motherboard too obviously so could somebody recommend a good one? If I do upgrade will I get that "wow" factor I was hoping for with the 6300?

Current build:
FX 6300
2X4gb 1333 ram
Asus M5A78L-M/USB3
Asus r9 270x 4gb
Windows 7 Ultimate
Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1200w

You should seriously invest in even a cheap 120gb SSD (or 64gb purely for the OS) to make your PC snappy.

Intel is going to give you much better FPS in poorly threaded titles like most MMO, RTS, and older games.

The i5 4460 will indeed give you a wow impression when you try it out.

Consider selling your old fx4100,new 6300, and motherboard, and buying an i5 4460 and even a cheap h81 motherboard would do. People claim online you "need" an h97/z97 to "upgrade" to Broadwell, but honestly man CPU improvements have stagnated since 2011 with Sandy Bridge anyway. You could even get a cheap locked used i5 2400 and cheap h61 motherboard and be wow'ed with the performance.

The power consumption would also be lower with Intel so that's a plus...

I mostly play WoW. Little bit of LoL every now and then. I'm definitely getting GTA 5 for pc when it's released.

I guess my expectations were too high. WoW on ultra settings is around the same with the 4100 (40 fps dipping to 15-20 fps in raids). GTA 5 has me worried though with the cpu.

I was also expecting common computer things to be snappier (browsing, open files, etc) still around the same though.

You probably want a SSD then if you want a snappier OS.

You should get a real motherboard even if you keep the 6300. With a real 990FX board with 8+2 phase power you could get a full GHz overclock. That is if you have a good cooler and case ventilation.

So, i5 and h81 mobo are the way to go, along with an OS SSD and you could even put WOW and your most played games on it for a good improvement in loading too. I don't personally feel the added expense of an h97/z97 motherboard is worth it tbh. Broadwell may be another wimpy ~7% improvement, call me a pessimist, but I'm not wow'd by that improvement for the added upfront cost, and tbh I don't understand why others harp so much on "having" to upgrade to broadwell, waste of money imo.
