Worth upgrading from GTX980 to 980Ti for 144Hz Monitor?

Hi all,

So I've got a GTX980 for my 144Hz monitor.

I can certainly tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps, and believe I can tell the difference between 60 fps and 144 fps. If I didn't believe that, I wouldn't have bought a 144Hz monitor.

Some games like Starcraft 2 will run for me at around 150 fps (except very hectic scenes where it drops sup 60), allowing me to take advantage of the 144Hz monitor.

Other games though like Witcher 3 run at around 60 fps and often dip to 45ish.

I don't plan to move up from 1920x1080 resolution, but is the upgrade to a 980ti worth it given I have a 144Hz monitor?

you wont notice much difference after 60 FPS... there is no need to upgrade unless you want better resolution Monitor.

First of all, can I just say that this is a colossal waste of money to buy a $500 card and then a $650 card in less than a year. Secondly, the difference that you will get by utilizing those extra Hz more in no way justifies not at least waiting for Pascal. Thirdly, who buys cards like this and runs them on 1080P? Fourthly, the difference between 980 and 980Ti is nowhere near enough to suddenly give you all 144FPS on Witcher, in fact the average will probably be below 80 still. God, you'd think people who decide to buy systems this expensive at least know what to do with their money.

Agreed, but no need to get upset. Some people just have more money to spend frivolously.

OP, Personally I can tell the difference between 60 hz and 144 hz. So if you are like me then I would sell the 980 for $250 on ebay, then put the money towards the purchase of the 980ti. 'Thatguythatexists' is right though, even with this upgrade, witcher 3 wont suddenly be running at 144 fps, but you can be sure its going to be a significant improvement.

Pascal is going to be another year, so there is no point in waiting that long. If you're willing to wait that long then why not wait 2.5 years+ for the next real leap in GPU technology?!

However if you're looking to stay ahead of the game, the base model 980 wont do it.

You can notice the difference, but would you blow an extra $650 for it? That's all I'm questioning.

I would sell the 980 for like $400-450 if I got the 980ti.

The regular 980 is NOT overkill for 1080p. There are many modern games that the 980 can barely run at max settings with reasonable FPS.

I already know the 980ti will produce around 30% more FPS than the 980. That seems significant to me.

Then you should do it. I bought the 980ti for 1080p gaming.

Admirable
Even the 980ti cant drive the witcher 3 at 144Hz without dialing down the settings, 144Hz monitors setups are on the SLI/Crossfire territory, your best bet would be to get another 980 and overclock your CPU, that will be a must. What is your current CPU?

Agreed.
