I currently use an aging system consisting of an i7-950 @ 3.06 ghz (no OC) , gtx 560 and 6gb of ram.

I recently put in an order for a new gtx 970 card. I'm wary that my CPU would likely be a (huge) bottleneck here. I also have considered trying to overclock my CPU to around 3.8ghz, as I do have a add on cooler mount on it.

Do you guys think its worth shelling out for something like a i5 4690 , or even an i7-4790 ? Would overclocking my CPU to 3.8ghz reduce most of the bottleneck?

Thanks for your input.

while the lga 1156 series chips have long been EOL and arent the fastest cpu's around, that i7-950 is still a pretty solid performer especially if you can manage 3.8+ghz.
will it bottleneck some games? meh, maybe. right now your most major source of bottle-necking is that dated gtx560.
there will be a noticeable fps boost by going to the gtx970.

if i were you id throw in a new gtx970 and maybe PSU upgrade, then wait till 2015-ish and upgrade to intels next socket

Thanks, I have a 1000W PSU at the moment so I think that will be fine for some time. I think I will wait for broadwell!

wattage hardly matters. you could run an i7 4790k 32gb ram gtx980 and a few drives/fans on a good 650w easily.

when it comes to power supplies, quality is what matters. crap units burn out and kill components all the time. just something to consider
