Worth upgrading? (GTX 660 SLI to GTX 970)

As the title suggests I was wondering whether it would be a worthwhile investment to upgrade from my current setup of 2x MSI GTX 660 in SLI to a single GTX 970, with the possibility of adding a second one further down the line. I can't really find many (if any) benchmarks that compare these two. There are a few that measure the difference between GTX 680 (closest performance single card to 660 SLI) but obviously with SLI scaling and what not, it is not 100% accurate.

Even though I only game at 1920x1080, with modern games I feel like VRAM is starting to hold me back ever so slightly, and will almost certainly be a hindrance in the near future. Although not the best games to judge performance by, FC4 and AC Unity and both performed poorly on my machine, and the performance in Dragon Age is also lacklustre. Would upgrading to a 970 help?

As a follow-up if you believe a 970 would be a worthwhile upgrade, which one would you guys recommend? I was looking at the MSI Gaming as well as the Asus Strix, the difference in price is not that much of an issue, but is the higher Asus cost worth it at all?

Thanks, Blackspur.

Yes, it is totally worth upgrading to an Nvidia GTX 970 as it has better driver support and is Mich optimized for running latest games. If you're about to buy a GTX 970 then go for a Nvidia GTX 970 Zotac AMP! Extreme Edition. Its better than Asus Strix Edition.

OK. I know DX12 is going to stack VRAM, however, older games, Witcher 3 and GTA 5 will not stack, they could but the developers would have to rewrite the entire engine. So that's never going to happen. Future DX12 games will be able to take advantage of stacking, again though, this is solely dependant on the developers and if they implement that within the game. On a different note, you'll only get 100% of all the benefits of DX12 with the new nvidia 900 series cards. If anyone tells you anything different to what I've said here then correct them, if they don't listen then forget them, they are full of bull.

So to anyone out there who says don't upgrade yet, well, they obviously don't want to take full advantage of DX12, which is pretty dumb in my opinion.
