I asked similar question yesterday my pc specs are i5 3570k p8h77-v motherboard ddr3 1600mhz ram and gtx 960 with 600 psu. I asked if I could run 2 gtx 960 in sli or buy a gtx 970 I was informed my motherboard was not good enough since my uncle has offered to upgrade my motherboard to a p8z77-v lx and was wondering if I could do sli with this motherboard I like the idea I could overclock so would it be worth the £50 upgrade so my choices
1 upgrade to motherboard add second gtx 960
2 upgrade motherboard and get gtx 970
3 stuck with what I have and just buy a gtx 970
And I asked this question but got no definitive answer is 2 gtx 960 in sli better then a gtx 970
Thanks in advance

Solution
You cannot SLI with the p8z77-v lx motherboard. Both PCI-Ex16 slots must run at a minimum x8 for SLI. On that board, the second PCI-Ex16 slot is wired x4.

Personally, I would not bother with the upgrade as I don't see the GTX970 being worth the cost, but if you still want to upgrade, stick with your current motherboard and just get a GTX970.

Solution
I would definitely recommend going straight for the 970.

Scaling with SLI is not very good, you get micro-stuttering, and more power is needed (although not much with nvidia cards)

If you are getting the 2GB version of the 960s in SLI, you will struggle, as games are now using around 3-4gb of VRAM, which is why people tend to recommend the R9 390 over the GTX 970, for the 8GB of VRAM (I have the 970 though and it's still more than fine for me)
Note: GPUs in SLI/Crossfire do NOT combine VRAM, so if you have 2x 960 2GB, they will SHARE 2GB, not combine to make 4GB.

If you are getting the 4GB version, then it's not as big of an issue, and you could go for the SLI if you really want to. But I'd still prefer the more powerful single card any day of the week.
