I've bought a GTX 1660Ti and it looks like my i5 6400 is getting too slow for new er titles. I want to upgrade my CPU but I'm not sure whether upgrading it to an I7 7700 is a good or a bad idea. My motherboard doesn't support 8-series Intel processors (MSI B150M BAZOOKA).

Looking at the price a i7 7700 cost the same as a i7 8700. I don't plan to overclock my CPU so not going with the K-model.

Would you upgrade to a i7 7700 or is it getting too old by now when looking at performance vs price?

7700 and 7700K are not cheap ($310 and $397, respectively at current Amazon prices), as they are the 'end of the line' for 100/200 series boards....

If you make the choice, please don't let anyone tell you that if you can't or won't OC, the 7700K makes little to no difference over the 7700, as the 7700K's base clock is 4.2 GHz, and with a max turbo of 4.5 GHz...differences of 600 and 300 MHz (respectively) compared to 7700 clock speeds.

GIven the cost of the 7700K(which requires a cooler, BTW!), I'd likely recommend just getting a new B360 and i7-8700 (costing only $346, nad just $10 more than the 8600!) and ending up way ahead anyway...

You can then repurpose the B150 and 6400 into an Open Media Vault, UnRaid, Rockstor, or FreeNAS rig....

You get a moderate performance boost with the upgrade, plus 4 (threads) the reality is that 4 cores, wether its 4/4 or 4/8 ain't cutting it much nowadays with modern games, 6 cores minimum, so this upgrade doesn't looks like a good idea to me, unless you can sell your old chip and pay a small diferrencer for the new one.

PLUS, it's a waste to not go for k series, provided your mobo can do it, overclock can get a nifty sinthetic 25% boost or real 10-15% on top of what you already get....

ultimely though, i would wait for amd 3000 or intel 10th 10nm hopefully, your chip is good but old, going for 8 series would mean you'll need yet again a new mobo after what should probably be out now in 2019. i'd wait.
