Worth upgrading to SSD in old system?

I have an older desktop, Gateway DX4320 with an AMD Phenom II X2 820 Processor 2800 Mhz 4 cores and 6 GB of RAM. It's only called up on for web browsing, streaming, playing DVD/digital video and other light tasks, which it seemed to do with ease when it was newer. It has a quite old hard drive that used to be quite fast, but it certainly doesn't seem that way anymore as it is constantly churning. The system moves at a crawl. How can I assess whether it is worth slapping a new SSD in and whether I will need anything more than a 3.5 to 2.5 cage adapter for the install?

2x2GB and 2x1GB can still be in dual channel mode. That is how I ran my Athlon X2.

SSD won't be able to run at full speed in an older system, but the SSD advantages are still there. Faster random data access due to no seek times or tracking.
