im thinking of buying a new CPU,RAM,MOBO..

currently using
msi z97m gaming
i7-4770 cooled by hunter vc twin
4x4gb 1866 gskill ripjaws
GTX 980 evga (reference card)
FSP raider 750w
24" 1080p monitor

i'm on a tight budget, I don't know if buying a 3600x or 3600xt is worth it or maybe a (2nd hand)3700x. and a b450 mobo.
or should i stretch it to 5600x and a b450? is there really a big difference between b450 and b550?

still choosing a cpu cooler, NH D15 chromax, dark rock pro 4, jonsbo hx7280 (new one, still waiting for reviews) want my cooler all black..

main use of pc is classes and a little bit of gaming. sticking with my 980 since gpus are OP right now.

planning to buy after the official release of win11 since my pc now is not supported by it.

so should i go for
3600x/b450?
5600x/b450?
a used 3700x is the same price as a brand new 5600x.

Solution
B550 gives you gen 4 pci-e for the primary GPU slot, and the M.2 Nvme slot closest to the CPU. The chipset gives you 3.0, for all other PCI-E slots, and M.2 Nvme. A decent B550 will also have better/faster rear I/O, than even many X570 boards. The power delivery is typically better, vs a B450 of the same nomenclature, ie B450 Tomahawk vs B550 Tomahawk. The CPU's you have mentioned do not need such a beefy cooler. Save a bit of cash, and get something like a Hyper 212 black edition.

Used 3700x for more multi core workload and 5600x for more gaming purposes, they're both great.
How about i7 10700f/11700f or i5 10400f/11400f? is it more expensive than ryzen counterpart?

B550 motherboard got pcie 4.0 lanes and improved memory traces, could overclock a little bit better on the ram and cpu (depends on model)
A good B450 should be at the level of mid tier B550 motherboard, with the downside only using pcie 3.0, but if you're enough with it, then a good B450 mobo should be fine

am really leaning towards amd right now, before i got my 4770, i came from a Phenom ii 965 BE. so yeah, i kinda miss using amd, all iheard was AMD is doing great, but, I havent experienced it, the only thing 3700x came to the picture is because i dont know if a 6 core upgrade is worth it from my 4770.

and because the noctua NH D15 doesnt support m-atx 1200/1150/1151.

thanks for this. but is B550 perform better when it comes to thermals? i dont overclock, i dont even know where to start..

The B450M Steel Legend, I believe has the same VRM as the Pro4, which was a excellent sub 90$ mobo, but with more features.
I would even recomment you trying to find the B550 M Pro4, it's great board and you can find it sometimes under 100$ which is a great deal.

The B550 M Pro4 would have better memory compatibility, SAM and other features that can be useful as well.

my friend use that mobo but b450m one not the b550m, ram is not on qvl, using r5 2600, before he couldn't go past more than 3000mhz, using his own ram kits no matter what the manual timings he did, now after the latest bios update, he could easily run the xmp speed.

So the QVL is the one that will guranteed to work with no worries, while the non qvl should work normally :D

If it's cheaper, go for i5 10400f or 11400f + b560m pro4 or steel legend or torpedo.
