Would a 5770 be and improvement over a 9800gtx

was wondering about this, also wondered where exactly does the 5770 fall in comparison to the 4850 and 4870 and 4890

9800gtx = GTS 250 < HD5750 < HD5770.

You're not going to see vast improvement, but the improvement is there. You'll see about a 15-25% gain, more or less. You'll also gain DX11 support and all the other features of the ATi 5xx0 series. I wouldn't recommend upgrading to a HD5770 to a 9800GTX because the performance gain wouldn't be enough of a gain.

hmm what about if i overclocked the 5770 do they overclock better then the 9800gtx? i have my gtx overclocked not sure how the 5770 would overclock if i could make it worth it.

because if theres a decent gain then id buy one now and (since my pc cant do sli got i got a bum x58board the ds4 from gigabyte) id possably get a 5770 and then later add another 5770 hen the prices drop

From what I've read a typical OC on the HD5770 is around 950mhz with the stock setting being 850mhz.

When you are looking at upgrading, it is a good idea to jump at least 2 tiers up the chart. Anything less is going to leave you feeling like you didn't get what you paid for, you spent money and are not seeing that big of an improvement.
Remember, new card, jump 2 tiers, or make do with you have until you can make that jump.

9800 GTX is tier 6 as is the 4850
5770 is tier 5 as is the 4870 / 4890 and GTX 260

As the article states ..... "I don’t recommend upgrading your graphics card unless the replacement card is at least three tiers higher. Otherwise, the upgrade is somewhat parallel and you may not notice a worthwhile difference in performance."

To notice an increase in performance, you'll need to hit Tier 3

its not word upgrading mate. The HD 5770 is a low end cheap piece of budget card junk in my opinion! I mean jeez, why 128bit bus?? Well, I know the answer. ATI is cheap low quality brand. Anyway, the HD 5770 performs better than the 9800GT of course but its like 3 years newer lmao... If your gonna buy a new ATI go for the 5800series. The HD 5770 is better than a HD 4850 and inferior to a HD 4870 so its like a "HD 4860"

They used a 128-bit bus to save money & make the card cheaper, but remember, they are using GDDR5, which is quad-pumped.

The 5770 is better than a GTS 250, and the 4860 uses the RV790 (4890's core) except SP's are cut to 640.




You're not going to notice much of a performance improvement, try to grab an 5850.

@JackNaylor, you only need to jump 2 tiers, the lower you go, the more products saturate the tiers & make the gaps between them smaller, at the high-end, the 5870 & 5970 are only 2-tiers away, but thats more than 4 tiers from where say a 4550 is.

Yes, despite being "only two tiers" higher the HD5850 is close to twice as powerful as his current card. Surely a worthy upgrade by any reasonable standard.

got a 5770 upgraded from a 8800gt. my 5770 is only the 512mb model from powercolor, but it runs all my games maxed out much better than my 8800gt. even games you wouldn't expect a performance boost such as red alert 3 runs faster. My only complaint is the catalyst control center had to be deleted for my card to run properly
