Would a bad CPU cause this

I am doing a new build:

7700k
Maximus x hero
g.skill 3200 16gb ram

I built the PC initially, and it had no POST. Lights came on the motherboard, fan turns once then it shuts down. No error codes on the mobo just dead. I tried a different PSU and still nothing. Tried putting RAM in different slots and nothing. Thought it was the mobo so RMA'd it, but the new mobo arrived and it's doing the exact same thing. My only other idea is the CPU is bad.

You can't use a 7700k on a Z370 motherboard. The 370 is for 8th gen only.

Thanks. I checked this right after I posted the question. Drunken purchases don't always work out I guess. I hate how they never changed the socket so everything appears as if it should work.

Yes the lack of a socket change was confusing as heck.
