Would a external SSD with a USB-C 3.1 cable work with a USB-C 3.0 port ?

Solution
I assume that Samsung external SSD is their T3 model. That model is equipped (at least here in the U. S. - it might be different in Sweden, I don't know) with a USB cable with a Type-C connector (for connection to the Samsung's USB port), with the other end a Type-A connector. Are you aware of that?

Also, do you understand that this external SSD is a USB 3.1 Gen 1 device (what we previously called a USB 3.0 device) and NOT a USB 3.1 Gen 2 device. It's performance should be stellar seeing it's a Samsung SSD but its included cable needs a Type-A USB port on your PC to connect to.

I suppose if for some reason you insisted on connecting the external SSD to a Type-C port on your PC you would need to obtain a USB cable having Type-C...
With the right USB 3.0 to USB C adapter it should work, although it will be hard to find an adapter for your purpose. The much much more common situation is a usb 3.0 device needing to plug into a usb C port.

It is going to basically come down to if the chip on the external SSD supports it or not. If it is a mainstream brand then odds are it will, if it is a cheap chinese brand then its 50-50 chance.

Maybe you misread it but my computer has 1x USB-C 3.0, and I was wondering if this external SSD would work with it (not included in the original post though) https://www.netonnet.se/art/dator/extern-lagring/harddisk-25-tum/samsung-t3-external-ssd-250-gb/231478.8912/
The site's swedish but maybe it auto translates?

Nevermind, I'm just really frickin stupid and didn't realize that it supports 3.1/3.0/2.0, sorry for wasting your time.

Lol OK.

For the record. There is no such thing as USB C 3.0.

There is USB 3.0 and USB 3.1. USB 3.1 comes in Type A (Same physical design as USB 3.0) and Type C ports.

Then to make things even more confusing there is thunderbolt 3 that uses the same connector as USB C.
At which point you start getting into all thumbs are fingers but not all fingers are thumbs kind of thing.

Yeah okay, that's confusing as hell

I suppose if for some reason you insisted on connecting the external SSD to a Type-C port on your PC you would need to obtain a USB cable having Type-C connectors on both ends. But since you've indicated your PC's USB port is a Type-C USB 3.0 it's of little consequence I would think.

Solution

Thanks for all of the info, I really appreciate it :) I'll pick this answer as the solution instead of the other one!
