Would a gtx 1080 work well with a 60hz monitor?

Yes a 1080 would work very well with a 60hz monitor, hell a 1080 would kill most games at 144hz.

If you gaming at 1080P than a GTX 1080 is insane overkill. You would be hitting 200FPS+ in most games (if the CPU doesn't hold you back). The 1080 is good for 4k @ 60hz.

Performance scales down with resolution. Most LCD panels are 60hz, but a 1080 will pretty much handle any available resolution at 60hz.

The question you should probably be asking is if a 1080 will work well with your current resolution. If you're playing at 1080p or 1440p, you're absolutely good to go. If you're playing at 4k, a 1080 will not get you to 60fps in all games, depending on your in-game settings.

Yeah pretty much, I just don't want to get a gtx 1080 and have that be a complete waste of time and have a 60hz 1920x1080 monitor stop it from reaching anything close to its full potential. If having that resolution and refresh rate would have a drastic negative impact on the performance of a 1080 then I would probably go for a 1070 instead

Sounds like you should get a GTX1070 and a new monitor rather than the 1080, or just get the 1070.

Depending on your future plans. You could go for higher refresh rates at 1080p and 24", or go for a 2560x1440@60hz IPS panel at 27".

If you run 144hz 1080P, yeah the 1080 will get bottlenecked most likely. But what is your CPU?

If all you run at is 1080P 60hz, you'll be fine. Plus, the 1080 is insanely overkill. I recommend you run DSR.
