Would a SSD be worth putting into a Dell XPS 420?

I am building a new pc but will keep my old Dell XPS 420.

Is it worth it to put in a SSD drive to keep the os and programs on and to use the hdd as storage and a place to save data from games?

If so do I have to find a old SATA II SSD or can I use the newer Sata III SSD's that are out now?

Yes, it would be worth it.

SATA II (3Gb/s) SSDs are "old tech". You should get a current generation SATA III (6Gb/s) SSD even though you will be connecting it to a SATA II port. Current generation SSDs will last longer and are more reliable/compatible.

Since its a old machine, should I only get the 64bg one and only put the OS and maybe one major program on it or should I go with the 120 gb one?

Depends on you budget. Get the largest that you can reasonably afford.
The 120GB drive will have better performance than the 64GB drive since it will have more NAND chips in it.

A 64GB drive is 59.52GB after it is formatted in Windows. Windows 7 takes about 19GB to install and all the updates. So you will have around 40GB remaining for programs/games/data.

Once you install windows 7/8 do you really have all that space? I heard they have a lot of page files and hidden memory.
Total threadjack I know haha, but I'm buying a SSD for my computer. I have ~10 steam games each at around 5gb ish plus the OS and some adobe applications (10gb) would a 120gb ssd work for my or would I need to get a 256gb one (uggh)?
