So I’m currently getting an upgrade from a i5 4440 to a i7 4790k and I was wondering if my Asus z87m plus would be compatible straight of the bat or I would need a BIOS update or would it just work work straight up. Ty

Look it up in the manual. The last board I had that required me change the name of the BIOS file was an older ASUS AM3+board, haven't had to do that since. I don't remember if a lot of Z87 boards required this.
It may or may not, only way to know for sure is to load into the BIOS check it's version number and see if that is compatible with the haswell devils canyon refresh. Not that big of a deal since you already have a cpu that is compatible in order to update it if you need to.

If it has an older BIOS that is not compatible, follow the process for updating the bios in your mobo's manual carefully, you don't want to screw it up.

Sorry for the mistakes in the post I was rushing, but the CPU will 100% be compatible if a BIOS update is needed or not.

Yes if it has a new enough BIOS the 4790k will be compatible.

Ok thats good, one more question I know how to do a BIOS update with the z87m but would I still have to rename the BIOS file to Z87MP like the others for example, the z87-PRO has to be renamed to Z87P.

that's very odd, i've not had to rename a bios file in the last 20+ years. You download the bios file from Asus directly, not from a 3rd party, and you follow their instructions to the letter.
