Solution
It depends. All AM3 CPU's will work in an AM2+ socket, but most AM2 sockets cannot support CPUs up to 110W. Make sure that your motherboard supports the wattage needed. The CPU will be bottlenecked by HyperTransport v1.0 as well. If you're ok with the bottleneck and the motherboard supports the wattage, it will work because AMD CPUs have the memory controllers built-in to the CPUs themselves.

Actually, AM3 fits in AM2 just fine, but AM2 doesn't go in AM3.

AM2 doesn't work with AM3 motherboards because it lacks the DDR3 controllers, but AM3 contains both the DDR2/DDR3 controllers, allowing it to work in an AM2 motherboard. The only way an AM2 processor can fit in an AM3 motherboard is if that motherboard had DDR2 instead of DDR3.

so i can get an am3 cpu and it will work just fine in an am2 socket

Not only is a physical fit but you have make sure that your current bios version, or update for your bios will also support it

P.S I know that this is an old thread but people in the future may read this.
