Would an older Intel Core i5-3470 be better than the i3-6100?

Now I'm looking to build a PC that can render a 1080p video MP4 with a length of 20 minutes in about 25-30 minutes. Those are my standards for a solid video editing PC. And it seems that the single core performance of the i3-6100 is amazing and hyper-threading helps a lot with video editing but the i5 has more cores and is believed to outperform the i3-6100 even if it's obsolete. So which CPU best fits my needs?

An i3 6100 would be better in some scenarios, whereas the i5 3470 would also be good. However i would say the i5 3470 is a bit better. For video editing, the 2 extra cores would be very nice. However, the i3 6100 is brand new, and has a very good upgrade path. I personally would go for an i3 6100, i own one and it is a solid processor.

3470 should be close to 20% more powerful.

Personally I'd take pure cores vs threads any day too. In the end, if an application is able to take advantage of multiple threads, a pure quad core will be able to provide the full clock of each core to those 4 threads. A hyper-threading CPU has to split the power of its 2 cores to run 4 threads hence less power allocated to each app thread.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I'm going to go for the i3 in this case because it doesn't perform too much worse than the i5 and it gives me a lot of room to upgrade. But if I can find a better deal on the i5 then I'll shoot for that.

Even if it performs better more often than not, it's hard to recommend an 1155 CPU in part because motherboards are so rare now.
