Would games at 1366x768 on a 1920x1080 screen look worse than a.......

Dell inspiron 15r turbo 15 inch display

can anyone answer this, I have searched all over some say it would look better and the others say it will look worse.

would games at 1366x768 on a 1920x1080 screen look worse than a 1366x768 screen on native resolution?
or
would games at 1366x768 resolution on a 1920x1080 screen look worse than playing games on 1366x768 screen on 1366x768 resolution or both will look the same?
I would have to run most games at 720p

If you run games at 1366x768 in a 1920x1080 resolution monitor, obviously it will look worse than in a 1366x768 monitor....
It will be look similar to what the game will look on a 1366x768 monitor if played at a lower resolution like 800x600....

Gaming shouldn't be a reason to choose a lower resolution display, and having a higher resolution doesn't require you to choose a faster GPU. Games can be run in non-native resolution for increased performance when necessary, so you can run in 1366x768 resolution on a 1920x1080 display. In doing so, there will be blur, but not enough to outweigh the large difference in overall image quality between typical 15.6" 1366x768 and 15.6" 1920x1080 displays. Games will often tend to look better running on a 15.6" 1920x1080 display in 1366x768 non-native resolution than they will look running on a 15.6" 1366x768 display in 1366x768 native resolution.

playing at none native rez will always look worse than on native. because your either not upscaling the image to fit the screen (which results in blured pixels or you dont have borders on a screen that isnt being fully used).
so yeah if your screen is 1366/768 it will look better than if your playing the same rez on a 1080p screen.
as for it looking better. that actually depends on the dpi of the screen and how far away from it you are. a 40inch 1080p screen wont look as good as a 23inch 1080p screen if your sitting 2 feet away from it like most pc gamers do. but it will look better if your 10-15 feet away because thats where you would normally sit from such a large screen.

Because 7730m graphic card would allow to play modern games at med-high settings 1366 x 768. But yes you can play older games released before 2011 at utra hight 1080 settings with that gpu.

Why so ?
then it means running games at 1366x768 resolution on 1920x1080 screen looks better than running games at 1366x768 resolution 1366x768 screen which is opposite of what others said till now.

Because more pixels give much more details to the scene than higher resolution textures.



Why would it mean that then? What's important is the resolution game is rendered at, not the resolution of the screen it's being displayed on.

Yes but if on 1080p screen if you run game at 720p resolution then in gaming the picture has to be stretched to fit the pixels of the monitor so wont it look worse bit pixelated stretched.

with that graphic card you have to lower the setting to 1366 x 768 and then play for latest games.
I have 2 options
i5-3210M with Full HD 1920x1080, 15 inch display
or
i7-3632QM with HD 1366 x 768, 15 inch display

Which one should i get ?

The reason is because a 1920x1080 display would require displaying 1.4 pixels for each pixel in the 1366x768 display and since pixels can not be displayed in units off less than 1 the image has to be blurred to estimate the change in pixel colors over the display instead of each pixel having the exact color it should have causing the overall image to look worse (How much worse will depend on the algorithm the display uses for the rescaling of the image and some displays will look better than others but there is still a loss of quality)

In other words to display a 1366x768 image on a 1920x1080 monitor each original pixel would ideally be using 1.4 pixels on the larger resolution display but pixels can not be split so the monitor (or software) has to scale the pixels using an algorithm that averages the surrounding pixels and displaying the result to blend the colors to make it look similar to what the original image looked like but doing so will introduce blurring and lower the overall quality of the image (And in most cases more image loss than using a lower in game setting (ie. Less AA, AF) to allow using 1920x1080 native resolution.



For a 15 inch display the 1366x768 resolution will be closer to the designed dimensions for a display -- Figure PC programs are designed with a 96DPI resolution in mind so an ideal 1920x1080 monitor would be 20"x11.25" or 22.5" diagonal display and for 1366x768 display resolution would be approximately a 14.2"x8" or 16" diagonal display -- so at 15" diagonal display the 1366x768 resolution will be displayed at closer to the DPI the programmer designed it for -- using 1920x1080 on a 15" display will mean that everything is much smaller than it was designed for and text will be very difficult to read.

You generally only get stretching when you are not running at at the same aspect ratio while downscaling. You will get some blurring however when you run at the lower and non-native resolution.

There is a third option that has not been mentioned yet where you can tell your graphics card to not use scaling in your properties settings and when you select the lower resolution in the game settings it will display the game on your screen in a smaller size with black bars on top and bottom but will be running without scaling at the resolution you selected for performance reasons. I mention this because some people find this to be more desirable than playing at full screen but with some blur. YMMV.

on 1080 screen If you first change the display settings and make the screen resolution 1366 x 768 and then launch the game at 1366 x 768 would that make a difference ?

Even if it means playing on lower settings or at non-native resolution the higher resolution screen is almost always still the better way to go if you can afford it.

The contrast and screen quality of most 1366x768 screens is very poor so even if you have to make some sacrifices as mentioned above it still gives what most would consider to be a superior viewing experience. When you are not gaming having the extra screen real estate is really nice as well (working in ms office or web browsing etc.).
