I am building a new pc now i am looking into i3 but lot of people say it cant play games and new games coming out but it looks like a good cpu i am pairing it with 8gig ram and r9270x.what setting would i play at?i am playing at 1366x768.

Toms Hardware currently lists it as the best gaming CPU for £80.

Intel's Haswell-based CPUs are very capable in games, though we're increasingly seeing dual-core Pentiums lagging behind in our favorite titles. Conversely, benchmark data makes it clear that the company's Hyper-Threading technology is effective in helping improve the performance of Core i3 CPUs in those same blockbusters.

There does seem to be lately more and more an "i5/quad-core is minimum for gaming" mindset creeping in, but that's far from the truth in my opinion. i5s probably have more future but some people have been getting respectable frame-rates on current games using dual cores/no HT that are 5-10 years old, so I'm unconvinced that a dual-core with HT is going to be a lame duck in a year or two.

At that resolution and RAM/GPU, an i3-4160 will do you fine.

Both the i3 and i5 come with a stock cooler, you don't need to buy an aftermarket cooler.

I would say DEFINITELY get the i5 if you can afford it

ya i thought the same thing 2 years ago and got an i3 3220,
currently AC U is the only game that maxes my cpu so for now it is fine.
but u know newer games like even DA:I go upto 70% and that was released for last gen too!
so what im sayin is dont plan on an upgrade to an i5 later just get it now, so that u dont regret buying an i3 later!
because the new gen of consoles is just starting and i would guess they all would require quad's and hyper-threading dosen't really cut it.
if u want better cooler and case that is upgradeable anytime u want, but an i5 would be a better choice right now man.
