In that thread the op talks about adding custom stickers on them as well.I guess leaving the protective sticker isn't a problem if people are adding custom onesi don't think they would be harming the GPU by being left on. A lot of fans have stickers on them anyway.
Only thing I can find is someone asking if removing them voids warranty - link - which would also be unlikley.

I have been watching some unboxing videos and most people peel every protective cover but those in most videos.So i guess I'm finethose are mostly for shipping to protect card. the only concern I would have is if they got hot and peeled while card was in operation, but as they on front of the fans, you should be okay.
I don't remember if I took them off my card and its been in use for 8 months now, so I expect you okay
