Would it be wise to upgrade to a GTX 1080 ti (when it releases) on this rig?

Hi guys, so I built my first gaming PC around the start of this year, and I am thinking about making some upgrades to it. My hope is to play games at a higher fps and to move from 1080p gaming to 1440p 144hz (and on a ips screen rather than tn). My current build is:

CPU: Intel Core i5 6500
Mobo: Gigabyte B150 G1.Sniper B7
8gb RAM
Current GPU: AMD R9 290
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA B2 750W Power Supply

I think my motherboard and cpu should still be fine [hopefully] for 1440p gaming since the gpu will be doing most of the work (if I get the 1080 ti, and I don't plan on doing sli) but I'm kinda worrying about the PSU being able to carry the wattage for it?

Btw I realise that the 1080 ti isn't even out yet and its still down to speculation, however I'm just wondering for a rough guesstimate of whether it would work out? If not, would the 1080 work out well enough for this build, or is there other upgrades I need to make? Thanks heaps! Means a lot.

The 750 Watts are more than enough for a single GPU.I would recommend you get another 8 GB of ram (16 in total) since it is quite cheap and it is slowly becoming a must so you don't have to upgrade in the future.I hope I gave you the answer you wanted. If not feel free to tell me what I missed!

if you want 144 hz gaming then you are going to need an i7

An I5 will work just fine, not a lot of games that are multi-threaded. Four cores is sufficient.

Not if you want 100+ hz gaming with a 1070 or 1080

Sorry guys for taking so long to get back to you, but do you guys think it would be worth it to get a cpu/mobo upgrade? Since the 1080 ti didn't come out, I'll probably get the gtx 1080 now. I've read in a lot of forums that the i5 6500 will bottleneck the 1080. I do play mostly cpu intensive games (i.e. csgo [i know its easy to get high fps for this game] and gta v, as well as other games like battlefield 1 and titanfall 2). I've seen a couple of people in my country looking to buy used i5 6500's and mobos, so it shouldn't be a problem to sell for me if it is worth the upgrade... but I don't want to go through the effort if it isn't worth it. THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR YOUR ANSWERS! :)

The thing is though, nvidia was expected to announce the 1080 ti at CES on the 4th/5th of January, but they didn't and are instead going to wait for the AMD Vega release, which AMD said would be released in the 1st half of the year (meaning, it could take 6 months to come out, and then even a bit longer for the 1080 ti). I don't really want to wait around 6 months just for a graphics card, and if I get the 1080 now and the 1080 ti turns out to be insanely awesome and worth the upgrade, I'll simply sell the 1080 and take a slight L for the 1080 ti upgrade. I play gta 5 and recently it can stay at around 50-60fps (and that's already with quite a few settings turned down) and then it drops sometimes all the way down to 30fps. And this is at 1080p. This isn't acceptable performance for me, so I'm looking for an upgrade that will hopefully work really well with 1440p 144hz, or even 1080p 144hz.

Ehh, I guess I can live with an r9 290 for 2 months more lol, thanks for that
