In some games that are CPU intense, you will see a bigger jump in performance, but in games that are not CPU heavy, the difference will be a lot smaller. The IPC for both chips are the same as there is little difference core to core. If I had a 6500, I would look for a 6700/7700 to drop in to your current motherboard. The difference between the 8700 and the 6700/7700 is only a couple of percent difference.

See the review from techpowerup.com below. The 8700k is 2% faster than the 7700k. 2% is within the margin of error and you will never see a 2% difference in fps. But you will save a good bit of money with the 6700/7700.

You would se improvement in CPU intensive games, but to use a i7 8700 processor you would also need a new motherboard.

Their a big performance difference. 32% in just the single core speed.

Even a big performance difference in the 6500 and 7700. 20% in just the single core dpeed.

As mentioned above going to a 8700 would require a new motherboard but you can move to a Core i7-7700K or i5 7600K or i7 7700. All of these will give you at least a 20% increase in single thread performance stock.

A 7700K or 7600K with good cooling will hit 4.8-5ghz really easy and that is a huge leap over what you currently have, you will see a FPS difference in every major Title on the market right now just upgrading the CPU.
