If i were to to test, if i could power the build without a thermal paste (with a cooler)

Without using a videocard.

I just want to see if the motherboard/cpu works properly.

What processor, motherboard and cooler are you playing with on this hypothesis? You shouldn't be working without a thermal paste FYI.

Only for few seconds to see if system posts, then turn it off. If you keep it longer it would basically be as without cooler which is bad. With or without video card does not matter here.

With a Cpu cooler, just no thermal paste. I'm going to return the cpu if it doesn't work. (I'm asking it cause, it would be easier to return/clean without a thermal paste applied)

A cooler with no paste is little better than no cooler.

DOA CPU?
If new, that is incredibly rare.

Cleaning thermal paste?
Takes all of 2 minutes.

If I'm the place you brought it from, I'd be far more suspicious of a DOA with no trace of thermal paste than one that has it. It gives me an idea that the CPU isn't a a problem with the product but with the person that used it. If you return a CPU you know that you used in an irresponsible way and fried it, you're committing criminal fraud.

Thanks for the answers. I didn't know a thermal paste was 100% necessary. I willl test it with a thermal paste
